IYA Constitution

The B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia Limited  is a company limited by guarantee.

The constitution below set out sets out the roles, responsibilities and rights of members, directors and Committee Members and provides the rules which govern various internal management activities such as meetings of members and directors.

The constitution is to be interpreted subject to the Corporations Act.

The objectives of IYA as per section 2 of the Constitution are as follows:

Principle Objectives:

(1) to further the teaching and promote the aims of the Iyengar method of yoga;

(2) to establish and maintain guidelines for the certification of Teachers of the Iyengar method of yoga; and

(3) to act as liaison between members of the company and the Ramamami Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, Pune, India;

(4) to make donations to the Bellur Trust to the extent set out in this constitution.

(5) to carry out activities, facilities or projects for the benefit or welfare of the
community.

Additional Objectives:

(1) to provide such social, cultural, administrative and educational services as are appropriate to the furtherance of the company’s objects;

(2) to prepare, establish and distribute a regular members’ newsletter in relation to the teaching and practice of the Iyengar method of yoga;

(3) to prepare and distribute educational material in furtherance of the company’s objects;

(4) to encourage and solicit the making of donations, gifts and testamentary dispositions to the company for the furtherance of the company’s objects and obtain and disburse those funds in the furtherance of the company’s objects; and

(5) to conduct assessments for the purpose of teacher certification and to develop and maintain professional standards within the Iyengar yoga teaching faculty.
